In a significant escalation of the RG Kar Medical College case, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that the role of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will now be under investigation. Speaking from the state secretariat, Nabanna, on Friday, Adhikari emphasized that the new administration is reopening the files to examine potential administrative interference and procedural lapses that occurred during the initial investigation of the 2024 rape and murder of the junior doctor.
The Chief Minister confirmed that departmental inquiries will look into whether specific instructions were issued by the former CMO or other ministers to misdirect the probe. As a primary administrative action, the state government has placed three senior IPS officers under immediate suspension: former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, former DC North Abhishek Gupta, and former DC Central Indira Mukherjee.
Adhikari stated that a detailed report from the Chief Secretary and Home Secretary highlighted serious failures in the registration of the FIR and the preservation of the crime scene. He specifically questioned the public conduct and press briefings held by the officers at the time, alleging that their statements were not in line with official protocols.
